People Believe in Conspiracy Theories Because It Makes Them Feel Superior

Here’s me in PJ Media, briefly thinking about the pervasiveness of conspiracy theories (particularly in the Middle East) and the reasons people believe them:

I have found that one reason is the frisson and excitement that comes with believing you have “discovered” some “truth” that others have not. This proves, in the conspiracist’s mind, that he is smarter than everyone else and privy to some bit of secret knowledge that the masses don’t know.
